Lyrics of the Super Mario Brothers Theme Song

Remember the Super Mario Brothers? This brainchild of Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the greatest video games ever made and is the highest selling game of all time. It has inspired countless imitators, five direct sequels as well as entire game series. The game was largely responsible for the initial success of the Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as ending the two year slump of video game sales in the United States after the video game crash of 1983.

Mario

Just as famous is the theme music. Composed by Koji Kondo, it is recognized worldwide, even by those who have not played the game, and has been considered a representation for video game music in general. There are four main themes in the original game:

  • Overworld – The primary theme.
  • Underworld – A simple theme used in the underground levels. The Underworld theme has been used, in one form or another, in almost every Mario platformer.
  • Underwater – A slower theme used in the underwater levels. The same melody has been reused in the title screen of Super Mario Bros. 2, as well as the title screen of most Mario remakes.
  • Fortress – A fast-paced theme used in the castle levels.

Most famous of the quartet is the Overworld theme. I’ve used it as a ringtone for a while and I’m surprised that so many people from all walks of life could identify the catchy tune. Mizos or non-mizos, young or old, everyone seems to recognize it. So I turned on my PC, ran the NES emulator, loaded the SMB ROM and set out on a virtual adventure to procure the lyrics of the famous theme. After hundreds of One-Ups and “Thank you Mario, but the princess in another castle”s later, I’ve managed to complete the World 8-4 of my conquest and bring to you the hallowed libretto of the legendary game:

  1. Didn’t read everything but found error on the very 2nd line. Corrected as below:

    Tudut dut tudut dut
Tud dut dut dut dut dut dut tudututuuu dududut dut dut
    s D l m l t l s D M L F S M F R

The above line is tonic solfa for the second line. Those in Caps are an octave higher. Coincidentally I’d learned to play the first 2 lines on keyboard today… yesterday i.e.

  2. ahh… the spacing screwed up the alignment

  3. wierd

  4. cool………..naupang lai minti hre chhuak

  5. ………………………………………………………..
